KUALA LUMPUR – The government has announced that the new site for the Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple is fully prepared, with all necessary approvals completed, in time for the upcoming Thaipusam festival.
“The government is committed to ensuring that religious practices continue smoothly for all communities,” said Hannah Yeoh, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories).
“We are coordinating the relocation carefully, with all relevant agencies involved, and will continue discussions after Thaipusam to ensure the process is orderly and respectful,” she said in a Facebook post.
Key milestones in the temple relocation include:
Sept 17, 2025: Building plan approvals granted by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
Dec 5, 2025: New temple site officially gazetted as a Non-Islamic Place of Worship.
Jan 14, 2026: Construction permission issued by the Federal Territory Land Committee (JKTWPKL).
Hannah expressed gratitude to former minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zaliha Mustafa and former Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Sharif for their roles in securing the new temple site, as well as Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Human Resource Minister Datuk Ramanan Ramakrishnan, and Malaysian Indian Congress’ (MIC) president Tan Sri Sri Vigneswaran for their joint support in ensuring harmony in the city.
Hannah said that this initiative underscores the Federal Territory administration’s approach of managing urban and religious development in a mature, respectful, and collaborative manner. – January 19, 2026
