KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has lifted the temporary access restriction on the Grok application on the X platform, after the company confirmed it had implemented additional preventive and security measures in line with Malaysian laws.
In a statement today, MCMC said the decision took effect immediately following assurances from X that the necessary safeguards had been put in place to address regulatory and safety concerns surrounding the artificial intelligence-powered application.
The regulator said a meeting was held on January 21 involving the Ministry of Communications, MCMC and representatives from X to seek clarification and firm commitments on compliance matters related to Grok.
“During the meeting, the platform confirmed that the required security and preventive measures had been implemented for the Grok application,” MCMC said.
Following a review of the explanations and initial confirmations provided, the commission decided to withdraw the temporary restriction, while stressing that the application will remain under close supervision.
“We lifted the temporary access restriction imposed on the Grok application, subject to continuous monitoring by the authorities,” the statement said.
MCMC had temporarily blocked access to Grok over use of the application to generate AI images of women and children in inappropriate and explicit, non-consensual content.
The commission reiterated that user safety remains its primary concern and warned that firm action would be taken should there be any breach of Malaysian laws.
“Any failure to comply with or any violation of Malaysian laws will be dealt with decisively in accordance with existing legal provisions,” MCMC said. – January 23, 2026
