KUALA LUMPUR — MIC will convene an extraordinary meeting to deliberate on the party’s official entry into Perikatan Nasional (PN), its president announced today.
Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran told reporters that although PN has already approved MIC’s participation in the opposition coalition, the party’s formal entry must still follow proper procedures.
“I will be calling a meeting of the Central Working Committee (CWC) in the near future to discuss the finer details of this development,” Vigneswaran said after attending the Ponggal celebration in Shah Alam today.
“It is important that we approach this in a structured manner, ensuring that our decision is fully endorsed by the party leadership and formally recorded. Only then can we officially cement MIC’s cooperation with PN.”
Last Thursday, former PN Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed that the coalition had approved MIC’s application to join.
Muhyiddin explained that the coalition had reached a consensus to accept the Indian-based party as early as last year and had been awaiting MIC’s formal confirmation.
If realised, this would mark the first time MIC leaves Barisan Nasional (BN) to align with the opposition since Malaysia’s independence.
Speculation over MIC’s potential exit from BN has been circulating for some time, intensifying following the party’s 79th Annual General Assembly in November last year.
During the assembly, delegates passed a resolution empowering party leadership to reassess MIC’s position within BN. Among the reasons cited for the move was the party’s diminishing role within the coalition.
However, BN Secretary-General Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir emphasised that the coalition remains intact, adding that MIC has yet to formally notify BN of any intention to withdraw. — January 24, 2026
