KUALA LUMPUR – Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was brought back to the National Heart Institute (IJN) after a brief outing at Pavilion Damansara today.

In a statement, his office said Dr Mahathir, accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, IJN’s Chief Executive Officer Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Ezani Md Taib, and a team of medical officers, visited a café within the shopping mall for approximately 40 minutes.

“Dr Mahathir chose to enjoy an ice chocolate, marking his first outing since being admitted to IJN on January 6 for treatment and recovery after a fall at his residence in The Mines, which resulted in a fracture to his right hip,” the statement noted.

Dr Mahathir had been under medical care at IJN following the fall, which occurred when he was moving from the balcony to the living room of his home. A medical assessment confirmed that the former Prime Minister had suffered a broken hip.

Following the short visit, Dr Mahathir was returned to IJN for further treatment. He is still not allowed to return home and will continue to receive medical care at the institute.

The statement further mentioned that visits to Dr Mahathir are still limited to close family members.

Earlier, a video circulating on social media showed Dr Mahathir in public for the first time since his reported hip injury and hospitalisation. – January 27, 2026
