ECRL on track for January 2027 launch: Loke

Transport Minister affirms the East Coast Rail Link will stay on track for its scheduled start, despite ongoing system integration and testing

KUALA LUMPUR – The Transport Ministry (MOT) is confident in its target to launch the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) by January 2027, with Minister Anthony Loke assuring that the timeline remains intact.

Speaking at a press conference following his 2026 New Year Address at the MOT assembly, Loke explained that while system testing and inspections have yet to commence, operational readiness is the key priority, Bernama reported.

He emphasised that a fully integrated system, rather than just completed track construction, is crucial before the rail services can begin.

“Rail systems are not just about the tracks. System integration must come first, and testing has not yet begun,” Loke said. “As such, MOT is maintaining the January next year timeline.”

The minister drew on past experiences with rail projects, noting challenges faced with the KLIA Terminal 1 aerotrain and the Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3). He described how system and software issues had disrupted operations in the past, offering these instances as valuable lessons.

System integration testing, Loke highlighted, is one of the most demanding phases in rail projects. It ensures that all components of the system function properly and work in sync before the full operations begin.

“MOT will continue to monitor the project and ensure all technical requirements are met to guarantee the safety, reliability, and smooth operation of the ECRL,” he added.

As of October 2025, the ECRL project, which will connect Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Selangor, had reached 89% completion. – January 28, 2026
