Decide within a week or leave: Anwar issues ultimatum to enforcement chiefs over graft accountability

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urges senior enforcement officials to reflect on their commitment and decide whether to continue in their roles or be reassigned

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given senior enforcement leaders one week to confirm their willingness to continue in their positions or to opt for reassignment to other roles.

In his special address to heads of enforcement departments and agencies combating financial crime and graft, Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, said that those who feel unable to meet the demands of their responsibilities should inform either him, their respective ministers, or department heads directly, Bernama reported

“If you have been entrusted with responsibility but feel unable to carry it out due to overwhelming challenges, heavier tasks, or attractive external offers, I suggest you inform your head of department, or me, or the minister within a week (from today),” Anwar said.

He emphasised that if any leader feels unprepared to bear the weight of responsibility, they should step aside to allow someone more capable and committed to take over.

The Prime Minister urged senior officials to use the week to reflect seriously on their commitment.

“I hope during this one week we truly reflect, together. If we are willing, why would we choose to move elsewhere?” he asked.

Anwar affirmed that he would respect those who opt to step down and take on a lower position, but made it clear that those willing to shoulder the responsibilities must do so to the best of their abilities.

“The Madani Government will not tolerate misconduct or open smuggling. We must work as a united team and resolve issues collectively,” Anwar asserted.

He also reminded those in high-ranking positions, many of whom have decades of service, that their long-standing recognition should inspire them to act with integrity and wisdom. “Do not take a casual attitude,” he cautioned. – January 28, 2026
