KUALA LUMPUR — The director-general and deputy director-general of the Environment Department, alongside an assistant environmental control officer, have been remanded for seven days as part of an investigation into corruption linked to the management of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste).
A fourth individual, a member of the public, was also remanded for three days, with the order extending until Sunday.
The remand was authorised by Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Putrajaya Magistrates’ Court earlier today.
The four individuals, dressed in orange lock-up attire and handcuffed, arrived at the court compound around 9:30 a.m., escorted by MACC officers.
According to media reports, the two senior officials were detained at approximately 6:30 p.m. yesterday after providing statements at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
The MACC is investigating allegations of abuse of power and corruption concerning e-waste management, which are believed to have occurred over the past few years.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, who confirmed the arrests, stated that the investigation is being conducted thoroughly and professionally, in line with legal provisions. He emphasised that the commission would not tolerate corrupt practices, regardless of the individuals’ positions or ranks.
The investigation is being carried out under the MACC Act 2009. – January 30, 2026
