PUTRAJAYA — The Cabinet has agreed to a 10-year limit on the Prime MInister’s tenure and will propose amendments to the Federal Constitution which will be tabled in Parliament during the present session.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said consensus for the 10-year limit was reached at the cabinet meeting yesterday after a thorough review of policy inputs, public views and recommendations obtained from stakeholder engagement sessions.

“The proposed term limit aims to prevent excessive concentration of power, strengthen the democratic system and increase the people’s trust in the country’s leadership institutions, in line with mature democratic practices at the international level,” she said in a statement today.

The term limit, part of the Madani Government’s institutional reform agenda, is an important step to strengthen accountability, checks and balances, and governance, Azalina added.

Several amendments related to the constitution are required to enforce the term limit, and these will be tabled in Parliament this session, she also said.

Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the term limit would be no more than 10 years, or two full terms.

The government had studied the matter since March last year, when Anwar ordered an in-depth study into the proposal. — January 31, 2026
