KUALA LUMPUR – Several senior PAS leaders remained tight-lipped when approached by the media at the party’s ongoing retreat today, declining to comment on the agenda being discussed.
Among those spotted were PAS Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Vice Presidents Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and Datuk Idris Ahmad, as well as the Political Secretary to the PAS President, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman.
Also present were PAS Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, PAS Central Committee members Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.
All leaders approached chose not to respond to questions, offering only smiles when pressed by reporters.
PAS Youth Information Chief Khairul Nadzir Helmi Azhar later clarified that the retreat was a routine programme held annually.
“The retreat is aimed at refining key performance indicators (KPIs), identifying tasks to be carried out and ensuring party operations run as usual,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian today.
A check outside the retreat hall revealed strict security controls by organisers. Leaders attending the programme were required to leave their mobile phones at the registration desk, while media representatives were barred from approaching the hall.
The retreat comes at a time when tensions within Perikatan Nasional (PN) have been mounting, particularly over the coalition’s leadership structure.
PAS has been pushing for greater representation and influence, with some voices suggesting a PAS leader should helm PN. However, Bersatu leaders, including Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, have resisted, insisting on retaining control of the coalition.
Analysts warn that the dispute could weaken PN’s unity ahead of the next general election, with PAS even hinting it may contest independently if no resolution is reached.
Recent meetings between PAS and Bersatu leaders have sought to project solidarity, but speculation of a rift continues to grow. – January 31, 2026
