KUALA LUMPUR – The Cabinet has agreed to establish a special committee to investigate issues surrounding Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s shareholding in a financial firm.
Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the committee will be chaired by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
“After the investigation is completed, the findings will be presented to the Cabinet for further action,” Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, told a press conference today, describing the move as necessary to safeguard the integrity of the investigation process.
Fahmi said the Cabinet did not deliberate on a call by eight PKR MPs, led by Datuk Sri Rafizi Ramli, urging Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to suspend Azam pending investigations.
“We will leave it to the Chief Secretary and the special committee to investigate first,” he said.
Earlier, Azam said he welcomed any independent probe set up by the government to examine the matter.
He said he had “nothing to hide” and maintained that all his financial and asset declarations were made in accordance with public service regulations and through official channels, as required of civil servants.
Azam had also initiated legal action against financial portal Bloomberg, which reported about his previous shareholding venture. – February 13, 2026
