KUALA LUMPUR — Bersatu’s internal affairs appear far from settled even with the expulsion of 17 members who were against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership.
Some remaining leaders have expressed dissatisfaction, with three resignations from party posts by Tan Sri Noh Omar, Tan Sri Rais Yatim and associate wing chief Dr Chong Fat Full.
Noh today announced his resignation as a party Supreme Leadership Council (MPT) member, citing a lack of respect from the party’s Disciplinary Board which he said had acted against the council’s decision regarding disciplinary action against party members.
According to Noh, the MPT meeting January 12 had decided that all disciplinary actions should be halted.
“So why did the disciplinary board continue to take action against party members?” he said in a video on Facebook.
He also criticised the board for taking action before the council could implement measures to restore party unity.
“Is the disciplinary committee not respecting the decision of the MPT? Which holds more power; the disciplinary committee or the MPT?
“If the disciplinary board does not respect the decision of the MPT, what is the point of holding an MPT meeting?” Noh said, adding that this lack of respect for the MPT was why he had decided to leave it.
The disciplinary board announced the sacking of 17 members yesterday, including Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. Those expelled included MPs, assemblymen and party division chiefs.
Muhyiddin has said that the sackings were the “best option” to restore the party from its internal turmoil.
However, the fallout continues, with others quitting party positions besides Noh.
Rais earlier told New Straits Times he stepped down as chairman of a committee formed to strengthen unity within Bersatu, saying “my advice is no longer relevant, with the deputy president and a large group of leaders having been expelled”.
Rais, who said he remains a Bersatu member, also said the party had lost its way and that his proposals, including to mediate between Muhyiddin and Hamzah, had been ignored.
“The expulsions were carried out hastily,” Rais, a former Dewan Negara president, added.
Chong, meanwhile, said he quit his post as associate wing chief, citing disappointment with Muhyiddin over the sackings of Hamzah and others.
Chong told The Star that the party is “hyper-sensitive” and he now expects the disciplinary board to “come after me” for his remarks.
“Muhyiddin has not only surrounded himself with the wrong people but he has also not been fair when he axed so many just because he was criticised,” Chong was quoted as saying.
He also predicted that “one-third” of associate wing members would quit the party.
Other leaders critical of Muhyiddin but who are still party members, such as vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee and women’s wing chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsuddin, both appeared at the “Reset” event to show support for Hamzah this afternoon. – February 14, 2026
