KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has dismissed suggestions that he take leave during the investigation into his alleged shareholdings, asserting that there is no need for him to step down.

Azam responded to calls for his temporary suspension, saying: “Previously, there have been individuals investigated in court who continued to perform their duties.”

Speaking at a press conference after attending the Kampung Angkat Madani launch in Kampung Sungai Buah, he emphasised that his continued presence in his role was essential, local media reported.

He added: “It is up to them. I don’t need to go on leave,” reiterating that he had seen others, even those facing court charges, continue to serve in their positions.

Earlier, Member of Parliament for Bachok, Syahir Sulaiman, had suggested that Azam be placed on leave to ensure a transparent investigation process. He argued that the move would restore public confidence in the MACC.

However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim rejected the suggestion, noting that there was no necessity for Azam to step aside while the investigation was ongoing. The Prime Minister affirmed that the government would rely on the special committee established to conduct the investigation thoroughly and impartially.

In response to further criticism, Azam also addressed allegations of the MACC’s involvement with a “corporate mafia”.

“If anyone wishes to spread unverified information, that is up to them. If anyone wants to lodge a police report, they are free to do so.”

Regarding the planned #TangkapAzamBaki protest, Azam said: “Protests against me are not new. I have been the target of demonstrations multiple times before.”

“It is up to them to assemble and protest. It is not my concern.”

Azam asserted that everyone has the right to voice their opinion, just as he has the right to perform his duties unimpeded. – February 15, 2026
