KUALA LUMPUR — Any complaint or action against a government official or agency must be grounded in law, backed by proper investigation, and not motivated by politics or revenge, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
Speaking at the Prime Minister’s meeting with Home Ministry staff and the Ihya’ Ramadan programme today, Anwar emphasised that genuine complaints should be handled through legal procedures and, where necessary, referred to the courts.
“Those who have served and sacrificed for decades across various agencies, if their weaknesses violate principles or if the mistakes are serious, then follow the legal process. To punish first before investigating is not the path I choose,” he said.
He added that while mistakes must be corrected, hasty action can create the perception that everything is flawed.
“We must not act out of dislike for someone or because they are not from our group. Nor should we act out of resentment because that person has taken action against groups associated with us. We must guard against such tendencies, especially in this month of Ramadan,” Anwar said.
The remarks come amid scrutiny over Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s RM800,000 shareholding in a financial services company, which Azam maintains was transparent and conducted according to procedure. Anwar noted there is no need for immediate disciplinary action and highlighted the role of the special committee chaired by Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar to conduct a thorough investigation.
