KUALA LUMPUR – The Health Ministry (MOH) reported 596 new tuberculosis (TB) cases nationwide up to Epidemiological Week Six (EW 6/2026), raising the total number of cases for the year to 3,161.
According to a statement released today, Sabah recorded the highest number of new cases at 755, followed by Selangor with 596 cases, Sarawak (332), Johor (280), and Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya (244).
Other states reported the following numbers: Kedah (181), Penang (172), Perak (154), Kelantan (121), Pahang (103), Terengganu (74), Negeri Sembilan (62), Melaka (48), Perlis (21), and Labuan (18).
While the MOH clarified that Ramadan is not a direct cause of TB transmission, the ministry noted that increased social gatherings during the month could lead to closer and more frequent contact between individuals.
As a precaution, the public is advised to practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette, maintain good ventilation in enclosed spaces, wear face masks when experiencing symptoms or in crowded areas, and seek medical attention if symptoms persist for more than two weeks.
The MOH also highlighted that the risk of TB transmission is higher in crowded, poorly ventilated spaces, particularly when individuals with active TB have not received treatment.
“However, the actual risk depends on factors such as duration of exposure, ventilation, and individual health status,” the statement said. – February 21, 2026
