KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating an individual believed to have uploaded content containing threats, insults and extreme vulgarities against the Terengganu Royal Institution via a personal account on the social media platform X.
In a statement today, MCMC said the content was found to touch on the sensitivities of the Royal Institution under the “3R” framework — race, religion and royalty — and contained elements of insult and threat that could potentially incite hatred, create public tension and disrupt national harmony.
To facilitate the investigation, the individual concerned was summoned to provide a statement at Lanchang Police Station on Feb 21, 2026. During the session, one mobile phone and one SIM card were seized for digital forensic analysis.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588], which provides for a maximum fine of up to RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
“MCMC will not compromise on any misuse of social media that involves elements of threats, incitement to hatred or insults against the Royal Institution,” the commission said.
“Firm and professional enforcement action will be taken in accordance with existing laws, regardless of the background of any party involved.
”MCMC said, reminding the public not to abuse digital platforms to disseminate content that is contrary to the law,” the commission said. – February 22, 2026
