Anwar reveals foreign-backed attempts to topple government

PM says movement, including prominent Zionist groups, sought to undermine Malaysia’s institutions

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today disclosed that attempts to topple the government involved local actors leveraging media influence and international institutions, including prominent Zionist networks.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said preliminary investigations by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) found that the movement was based abroad and well-funded to strategise against the government.

According to initial reports, companies, organisations, and individuals involved held six meetings throughout 2025, both locally and overseas.

“They aimed to gather information and influence international roundtables and NGOs, then mobilise an international push, informing Bloomberg for further action,” he said, according to Bernama.

The movement also reportedly contacted foreign media to question government efforts, particularly the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and used international contacts to shape narratives challenging the country’s credibility.

Anwar was speaking in response to a question from Datuk Seri Shahidan Kasim (PN-Arau) on the status of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) investigation into the alleged plot and its threat to parliamentary democracy during the Ministers’ Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat.

Anwar added that the movement sought to influence parliamentary questions via MPs, promote individuals under investigation, and undermine public confidence in the economy.

The plot, linked to a series of large-scale anti-corruption investigations, reportedly began in August 2024 and is expected to continue until the next general election.

“This is not about a specific issue or criticising the prime minister, but about challenging the country’s entire system to topple the government. It concerns national security,” he said, adding that further details, including the role of Zionist groups, will be revealed once investigations conclude.

Answering concerns about election integrity, Anwar assured that the upcoming polls will be transparent and free from foreign interference, emphasising cross-party commitment to safeguarding Malaysia. He also suggested that the National Security Council (MKN) coordinate discussions with opposition representatives to address the matter comprehensively. – March 3, 2026
