KUALA LUMPUR – A police report has been lodged over a viral video allegedly showing an individual stepping on and bending a sacred Hindu symbol, the Thirusoolam.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Sentosa assemblyman Gunaraj George has urged the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to launch an immediate investigation, warning that the incident could inflame religious and racial tensions if not addressed promptly.

Gunaraj said the act could spark unwanted tensions between races in the country.

“This act not only insults the beliefs of Hindus but also has the potential to spark tension between races and religions in our country,” he said.

He added that firm action must be taken against individuals who disrespect the beliefs of other religions.

“If firm action can be taken against those who insult the Holy Qur’an, then in the interest of justice and equality before the law, the same action must be taken against anyone who insults the sacred symbols of other religions,” he said, adding that there should be no compromise when it comes to religious insults.

He also urged Malaysians to remain calm and not be influenced by any provocation.

“Respect the religion of others as we would want our own religion to be respected. Do not destroy the harmony that we have built together all this time,” he said.

Earlier, the Malaysia Hindudharma Maamandram lodged an official complaint with the Home Ministry over a viral video showing a man allegedly stepping on a Thirusoolam.

The individual named in the complaint, activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak, is alleged to have stepped on and bent the Thirusoolam while describing the act in the video as a “leisure activity.” – March 10, 2026.
