KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has responded firmly to the circulation of disturbing visuals on Threads and Facebook depicting an individual stepping on the Al‑Quran — an act described as deeply insulting to Islam and with the potential to inflame religious sensitivities and disrupt social cohesion in Malaysia’s multiracial, multi‑religious society.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the original post has since been removed, and the account in question believed to be operating under the name Dickie Borneo is currently untraceable. Nonetheless, MCMC confirmed that further inquiries are underway.
In a statement today , MCMC said that it has identified additional posts within social media groups containing similar religiously offensive elements, believed to involve the same individual.
“All related material has been preserved as evidence to support the investigation and potential prosecution,” the statement read.
“MCMC is working closely with social media platforms to secure the account owner’s information, and with the Royal Malaysia Police to ensure swift and decisive action.
“We will not compromise on content that insults religion, incites hatred, or touches on the sensitivities of race, religion, or the royal institution,” the commission said.
The commission urged the public not to further share or amplify content that could escalate tension or disturb public order, emphasizing that strict action may be taken under existing laws against those responsible for creating or disseminating such material. – March 11, 2026
