KUALA LUMPUR — Police said several key witnesses sought by police in an investigation into activities allegedly detrimental to parliamentary democracy are currently believed to be outside Malaysia.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said Immigration Department records indicate that the individuals left the country through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) between January and February this year.

He said the authorities are attempting to locate the witnesses to assist with an ongoing probe into an alleged attempt to overthrow the government.

The investigation is being carried out by Bukit Aman’s classified crimes unit under Section 124B of the Penal Code.

“As of today, statements have been recorded from 14 witnesses under Section 112 of the Malaysian Criminal Procedure Code,” Kumar said in a statement today.

He added that efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining witnesses as investigators work to advance the case.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Ismail had earlier confirmed that the investigation relates to actions deemed to threaten the country’s democratic process.

Police have also urged the public to refrain from speculating on the matter in order to safeguard the integrity of the ongoing legal proceedings. – March 13, 2026
