KUALA LUMPUR – The newly expanded Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) in Kota Bharu, Kelantan will be fully operational starting tomorrow (March 16), marking a major boost to passenger capacity and connectivity for the East Coast.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the new terminal increases annual capacity from 1.5 million to 4 million passengers, in line with rising demand. Passenger movement at KBR reached 1.7 million in 2025, a 16.2 per cent jump compared to the previous year.
Among the upgrades are a larger terminal building, dedicated departure and arrival levels, and a redesigned kerbside area with separate lanes for taxis, buses and e‑hailing services.
“These improvements will enhance the passenger experience and ensure smoother airport operations, especially ahead of the festive season. At the same time, they strengthen Kelantan’s air links and support tourism, business and economic growth,” Loke said in a statement.
Currently, five airlines operate at KBR, covering six domestic routes and one international route to Singapore. The official launch ceremony for the expanded terminal will be announced later. – March 15, 2026
