KUALA LUMPUR – The allegation that independent preacher Zamri Vinoth fled to Thailand will be addressed in the Magistrates’ Court here tomorrow, where he is scheduled to be charged at 9am.

Speaking to Scoop, his lawyer, Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, said Zamri had travelled to Thailand for a business trip.

“He went on March 9 and came back on March 11,” Haniff said, adding that Zamri was already in Malaysia when the statement was released by Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail on March 13.

According to earlier reports, the IGP confirmed that Zamri had fled to Thailand.

According to Khalid, efforts to track down the independent preacher were carried out with the assistance of the Thai authorities.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri M. Kumar said that Zamri had exited the country through official border checkpoints before entering Thailand.

“Checks found that both individuals (Zamri and Tamim Dahri) were detected leaving the country through legal routes into Thailand.

“We (police) are using the available legal provisions to bring them back to face charges in court,” he added as reported by NST.

Later in a Facebook post, Zamri said that he did not run away to Thailand as there is no need for him to do so.

“I will personally go and see the IGP if necessary, God willing. I am not running, and there is no need to run,” he said in the statement.

He also questioned why he is the only individual being targeted in the midst of several incidents involving attacks, burning of vehicles, and damage to property.

“Why is it only me who wants to be accused? What did I do wrong? What did I incite? None of our people went to attack anyone. None of them went to burn anyone’s car, none of them went to attack anyone’s house,” he said.

Zamri is expected to be charged for organising the gathering on February 7 in front of a shopping complex in the capital and for the statements he made during the gathering.

The charge against him is expected to be read out before Magistrate Faezahnoor Hassan. – March 16, 2026. — March 16, 2026
