KUALA LUMPUR – A student at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) has been expelled following charges of desecrating the Quran and posting offensive content on social media.
UMPSA vice-chancellor, Prof Dr Yatimah Alias, said the male student’s case was concluded after the Student Disciplinary Committee convened on March 9, Bernama reported.
“Following disciplinary proceedings, the student was found guilty and expelled under Rule 58 of the Universiti and University College (UMPSA) (Student Discipline) Rules 2024,” she said in a statement today.
She added that the university hopes the decision will serve as a reminder for all staff and students to act responsibly and protect the institution’s reputation.
“UMPSA will not tolerate content that incites hatred based on religion, race, or the royal institution (3R), as it could fuel racial tensions and disrupt public harmony,” Yatimah said.
On March 3, 21-year-old S. Vikneswaran pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court in Kuantan to charges of desecrating the Quran on February 22, with the intent to insult the religion.
He was also accused of using the Threads account “ryandaselva” to deliberately share harmful content intended to upset others. The court granted him bail of RM10,000 for both charges, ordered him to report to the police monthly, and set April 8 for the hearing. – March 24, 2026
