KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has enough fuel reserves to last at least until May, but the government is already seeking alternative sources to safeguard supply against global uncertainties.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the administration monitors the energy situation daily in response to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have direct effects on global markets, Astro Awani reported.
He also reassured that the RON95 Budi Madani subsidy scheme will continue beyond May this year.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Malaysia will utilise all available resources, including Petronas’ expertise, to source petroleum from countries such as Brazil and Canada.
“So far, supplies are sufficient until May, but we are also exploring other options as a precautionary measure.
“At present, Malaysia’s strength lies in Petronas’ capacity, which has extensive investments in various regions around the world.
“Unlike countries that depend on a single source, Malaysia has access to supplies from several strategic locations, including Brazil, Suriname, and Canada,” he said after Friday prayers at Masjid Tengku Ampuan Jemaah Shah Alam today.
According to Anwar, this strategy allows Malaysia to offset potential disruptions from the Gulf region, currently affected by conflict.
He added that while the situation remains stable, with no fuel rationing or sharp RON95 price hikes, the government is taking proactive measures. Special meetings are being convened to coordinate economic and national security responses.
“A meeting with all the Chief Ministers, state leaders, and political party leaders will be held to coordinate action comprehensively.
“The government’s priority is to ensure that the people are not affected by external crises, including price surges and supply shortages,” he said.
On Thursday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly allowed Malaysian oil tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
Anwar added that he has also contacted Pezeshkian and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to discuss the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. – March 27, 2026
