CYBERJAYA – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched its Nexus application to help users measure internet speed and monitor network performance in real time, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
Speaking at the launch ceremony at MCMC Tower today, Teo highlighted that the app allows the public to contribute real network performance data from their locations, which is automatically shared with MCMC and network providers, Bernama reported.
“More importantly, this application provides an opportunity for citizens to contribute data related to network quality in their respective areas. MCMC Nexus is not just an application, but rather an important driver of Malaysia’s digital future, including supporting the development of smart cities and the delivery of high-quality internet,” she said.
Also present at the event were MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and other commission members.
Teo noted that while the application was introduced in stages, it has already received an encouraging response, with 51,415 downloads recorded since February 2025. Active user participation has resulted in the collection of 168 million network quality data points nationwide, helping identify areas with weak coverage and service issues.
“The effectiveness of the system was also proven through the operation of the MCMC Nexus Network Monitoring Centre, which monitored network stability during major events throughout 2025, including the Maritime Exhibition, Langkawi International Aerospace 2025 (LIMA 2025), the ASEAN Summit, and National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations,” she added.
Teo emphasised that the platform also empowers businesses, expands access to digital education, and fosters innovation across sectors.
Security and user data protection remain priorities in the development of the application. She said MCMC Nexus underwent independent testing and was officially certified on March 30 by a laboratory accredited under the ISO/IEC 17025 standard. The Personal Data Protection Department confirmed that the app does not collect personally identifiable information and only records anonymised network performance indicators, in line with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
The application is available for free on the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Huawei AppGallery.
Meanwhile, Teo highlighted that as of 31 January, 9.82 million premises nationwide now have fibre-optic broadband access, exceeding the original target of 9 million. The country’s median mobile broadband speed has reached 147.24 Mbps, surpassing the 100 Mbps goal.
Internet coverage in populated areas has reached 99.71%, while the 5G network continues to expand through Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) at 82.4% coverage, with U Mobile achieving 71.9%. – March 31, 2026
