KUALA LUMPUR – The Education Ministry (MOE) has officially appointed 300 MySTEP Assistant Hostel Wardens (MyPWA) to boarding schools nationwide, effective April 1, in a move to improve student safety and welfare while reducing teachers’ administrative burden.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced the initiative in a media statement today, noting that the personnel will oversee night-time monitoring to ensure the continuous well-being of hostel students.
The move forms part of the ministry’s broader safety reform agenda across educational institutions, with a specific aim of allowing educators to focus on their primary role of classroom instruction by relieving them of non-teaching duties.
The MyPWA initiative is one of the operational steps under the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026–2035, the nation’s latest education roadmap launched in January 2026.
Replacing the previous 2013–2025 blueprint, the new plan outlines comprehensive reforms focused on quality, access, equity, resource efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability.
A central pillar of the roadmap, the educator well-being seeks to professionalise the teaching service by removing administrative responsibilities such as hostel supervision.
By delegating these duties to specialised MySTEP personnel, the ministry aims to give teachers more time to develop competencies in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital literacy.
Beyond improving administrative efficiency, the 2026–2035 blueprint also introduces significant policy shifts, including lowering the preschool entry age to five and reintroducing standardised assessments through the Malaysian Learning Matrix for Year Four and Form Three students.
The appointment of the 300 assistant wardens also supports the ministry’s broader efforts to combat bullying and improve hostel living conditions, ensuring a safer and more supportive environment for students.
