Trump orders US Navy to blockade Strait of Hormuz

Move comes after talks fail, prompting Iran’s military to warn of deadly consequences

KUALA LUMPUR — US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the US Navy would immediately begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz and intercept any vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran, Reuters reported.

Trump made the declaration in a post on his Truth Social platform hours after US-Iran peace talks concluded without a deal.

The president said the discussions “went well, most points were agreed,” but added that both sides had not reached an agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme.

“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote. He also stated, “I have also instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.”

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy Command responded on Sunday, warning that any “wrong move” in the strait could trap adversaries in “deadly whirlpools,” according to IRGC-affiliated Sepah News, reported by Xinhua.

The command said Iranian drones are monitoring the strait in real time and that all activity in the area is under the “full control” of Iran’s armed forces.

The statement came shortly after Trump’s announcement on Truth Social regarding the immediate blockade of ships entering or leaving the strategic waterway. – April 12, 2026
