KUALA LUMPUR — The US’ naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz appears to be targeted on vessels going to and from Iranian ports.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) in announcing the naval blockade following US President Donald Trump’s order, said that it will be applied to all maritime traffic “entering and exiting Iranian ports”.
The blockade is to begin at 10pm Malaysian time tonight.
“The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
“CENTCOM forces will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports,” it said in a statement posted on X.
It urged commercial mariners to monitor broadcasts for Notice to Mariners regarding information on the blockade, adding that shippers operating in the Gulf of Oman and Strait of Hormuz will also be issued a formal notice prior to the start of the blockade.
Trump ordered the naval blockade on Sunday after talks between the US and Iran on a ceasefire failed to reach an agreement Saturday.
Trump added that the US Navy is to track and intercept all vessels that paid Iran to pass through the strait, in reference to the “toll” charges or safe passage fees Iran has approved on certain vessels.
Malaysia has seven vessels that are in the area, said to have cleared or in stages of transit through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on April 10. – April 13, 2026
