KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will charge one individual in court and issue compounds to five others over the spread of false information on fuel price increases linked to the West Asia crisis.
In a statement today, MCMC said the decision followed a review by the Attorney General’s Chambers of investigation papers into the cases.
One case will be prosecuted at the Sepang Sessions Court, while five individuals have been offered compounds of RM25,000 each. Four other cases have been issued warning letters.
MCMC said the actions stem from investigations under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
“The public is reminded to use digital platforms responsibly and refrain from disseminating content that may affect community harmony and public order,” it said. — April 16, 2026
