Pay cuts possible for ministers as economy faces pressure: Anwar

Focus on governance and domestic energy security remains key

KUALA LUMPUR – The Madani Government is willing to consider reducing Cabinet ministers’ salaries should the national economy deteriorate further amid the ongoing global energy crisis, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He acknowledged that current ministerial pay is modest relative to the responsibilities involved but maintained that it remains justified when ministers perform effectively, Bernama reported.

“Our salaries are relatively low, but what matters is that ministers carry out their duties well. As for me, I have no issue with not taking a salary, but it is their right as long as they perform.

“However, if the economic situation worsens, we may have to consider reviewing or reducing ministers’ pay,” he said after Friday prayers at Surau Bomba Cyberjaya.

Anwar was responding to questions on whether the government might follow Indonesia’s example in cutting ministers’ salaries.

On a separate matter, he emphasised that Malaysia does not arbitrarily sell fuel to other countries, as the government’s priority is ensuring a sufficient domestic energy supply.

“Actually, we do not sell fuel. We said we need supplies from them – this must be understood. We need phosphate (fertiliser) from Australia, and they need urea from us,” he said, referring to discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese yesterday on complementary bilateral trade.

He also clarified that Malaysia cannot currently supply diesel to external parties, as domestic needs must come first.

“If there is a surplus, we can consider it. At present, there isn’t. But the allegations being made suggest otherwise, so I do not think they are appropriate,” he added.

Yesterday, Malaysia and Australia reaffirmed their joint commitment to maintaining a stable and resilient energy supply amid global uncertainties. Anwar and Albanese, who is on a two-day official visit, also highlighted the importance of open trade flows to bolster both economies. – April 17, 2026
