KUALA LUMPUR — A detainee who escaped from Sungai Buloh Prison earlier this month has been recaptured after nine days on the run.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the escapee was apprehended at about 5pm yesterday along Jalan Batu 14, Jalan Gombak Lama.

He confirmed the detainee had been on the run since April 9, and thanked the public and authorities for their assistance in the search.

“The assistance provided was crucial in ensuring the prisoner was successfully recaptured to maintain public safety and order,” he said in a statement.

Last week, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng raised concerns over the escape involving 24-year-old Pakistani national Muhammad Hassan, who fled while being transferred within the Sungai Buloh Prison compound after attending court proceedings at the Shah Alam Court.

The suspect had been remanded to assist investigations into multiple sexual offences against children, as well as charges under Section 377C and Section 392 of the Penal Code, Section 14(d) and (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The Prisons Department previously said the incident occurred at about 6pm on April 9, when the detainee escaped during transport following the conclusion of his trial.

The escape has since raised questions over prison security protocols and the handling of inmate transfers, with calls for a thorough review to prevent a recurrence. — April 19, 2026
