MUAR — The second Malaysian oil tanker that had passed through the Strait of Hormuz is expected to arrive in the country by the end of the week, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said.
The shipment which follows the arrival of the first vessel on April 17, is carrying one million litres of crude oil, and will help strengthen Malaysia’s supply security, the Madani government spokesman said.
“This will ensure sufficient crude oil stocks for processing at local refineries, allowing supply, particularly for Petronas, to remain adequate through to the end of June,” he told reporters after checking out the implementation of the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) and diesel subsidy system at petrol stations in Pagoh today. Also present was Johor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living director Lilis Saslinda Pornomo.
Fahmi also said fuel supply issues will be be discussed at the National Economic Action Council meeting tomorrow.
He acknowledged calls, including from media practitioners, for the BUDI95 subsidy quota to be restored, to 300 litres per month, adding that the downward adjustment to 200 litres per month was a temporary adjustment.
Five other ships carrying oil supply for Malaysia remain in the Strait of Hormuz, which is again closed by Iran after the US said its naval blockade of the strait would continue.
On Sunday, the US also attacked and seized an Iranian cargo ship which defied its naval blockade, deepening uncertainty over the strait’s reopening, vital to a quarter of the world’s oil supply. – April 20, 2026
