KUALA LUMPUR – A military officer is under investigation after allegedly driving against traffic while intoxicated, causing a fatal collision on the Maju Expressway (MEX) at KM 1.9 early Thursday morning.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said preliminary investigations suggest the 31-year-old suspect’s Ford Fiesta veered into the opposite lane before colliding head-on with a Perodua Alza e-hailing MPV.
“Preliminary investigations found that the car driven by the suspect is believed to have entered the opposite lane before colliding head-on with an e-hailing MPV travelling straight on the left lane,” he said in a statement.
The MPV, driven by a 41-year-old man, was carrying two Bangladeshi passengers who had just arrived from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
“The MPV was carrying two Bangladeshi passengers, a 22-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman who had just arrived from KL International Airport (KLIA). The male passenger, who was seated in the middle row, was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries. The female passenger sustained bodily injuries and is receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital,” ACP Mohd Zamzuri added.
The e-hailing driver also suffered head injuries, while the suspect sustained only minor injuries. A 36-year-old local woman in the Ford Fiesta was also treated at Kuala Lumpur Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.
Breathalyser tests confirmed the suspect exceeded the legal alcohol limit, although urine screening was negative for drugs.
“The driver has been arrested and the case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 2020),” he said.
