KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed allegations that his visit to Africa last year was linked to stashing embezzled funds, describing the claims as outright slander and urging those responsible to provide proof.
He said he would not be distracted by such accusations, stressing that unsubstantiated claims only fuel misinformation.
“If there is evidence, produce it. No one is exempt. Otherwise, it becomes a breeding ground for slander. I do not wish to entertain it, I have much work to do,” he told reporters after meeting students at the Temenggong Ibrahim Campus of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) in Johor Bahru, today.
The remarks came after a video went viral on social media featuring a woman identified as “Sofia Rini”, a witness in an ongoing corruption case involving businessman Albert Tei and former political secretary to the Prime Minister, Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin. In the video, she allegedly made claims linking Anwar to the purported movement of illicit funds during his Africa visit.
The Prime Minister undertook official visits to Ethiopia, South Africa and Kenya from November 18 to 24 last year, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and explore new investment opportunities for Malaysia in Africa.
Separately, Anwar said issues involving customary institutions in Negeri Sembilan should be resolved in accordance with the state’s traditional legal framework, adding that the matter should be handled with wisdom and patience.
“It may take some time… we leave it to wisdom (of the relevant parties),” he said.
The comments follow reports that Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun had stated that a recent attempt by four Undang, led by Datuk Mubarak Dohak of Sungei Ujong, to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as Negeri Sembilan’s ruler was not recognised.
Aminuddin reportedly said Mubarak no longer holds authority as Undang of Sungei Ujong, and that the move contravenes Articles 10 to 12 of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution 1959.
Meanwhile, the 15th Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly sitting, originally scheduled to resume from April 27 to 29, has been adjourned sine die. – April 24, 2026
