KUALA LUMPUR – The government is still assessing the best approach for a proposed review of petrol subsidies for high-income earners, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
Anwar explained that several ministries and committees have been discussing the proposal over the past few weeks. However, the government has yet to decide whether it will affect the T20, T15, or other groups, Bernama reported.
“The proposal has been studied for the past three to four weeks, but we have not yet determined whether it will cover T20 or T15, so that it does not burden upper-middle earners and can be implemented smoothly,” he said, adding that a decision would be made soon.
He made the remarks to reporters after attending a meet-and-greet session with Indian students at the University of Malaya today.
Speaking as Finance Minister, Anwar was responding to questions on the proposed subsidy review for the T20 group and the continuity plan for petrol subsidies, which is expected to be announced by mid-month.
Earlier, Economic Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the Prime Minister would unveil a plan to ensure continuity of the nation’s oil supply amid global uncertainty caused by prolonged conflicts in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that the plan would focus on maintaining adequate domestic oil supply to support economic activity, noting that the government had previously assured that current supplies could last until June. – May 10, 2026
