KUALA LUMPUR – Tamil actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay has pledged to strengthen ties between Tamil Nadu and Malaysia after receiving a congratulatory message from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim following his appointment as the state’s new Chief Minister.
Responding to Anwar’s message on social media platform X, Vijay said he was honoured by the Malaysian leader’s warm remarks and looked forward to enhancing bilateral cooperation between both sides.
“I am deeply honoured to receive such a warm congratulatory message from the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Thank you for the kind words and consideration.
“I am committed to further strengthening cooperation and deepening the bonds of friendship between Tamil Nadu and Malaysia,” he said.
The development came as Vijay also moved quickly on one of his major election pledges, ordering the closure of 717 Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor outlets statewide as part of efforts to address social concerns linked to alcohol consumption.
Earlier, Anwar congratulated Vijay on his appointment in a Facebook post, describing the occasion as a historic political moment for Tamil Nadu.
The Prime Minister highlighted the deep-rooted historical, cultural and people-to-people connections shared between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu, noting that relations between both sides span generations.
“We are ready to work closely with the new Chief Minister to further strengthen bilateral relations in the years ahead.
“I look forward to working closely with Chief Minister Vijay in the coming years for the mutual benefit of both sides,” Anwar said.
Anwar also reflected on Vijay’s decades-long film career, where the actor frequently portrayed roles defending ordinary people against injustice and corruption.
“For years, Vijay’s loyal fans have watched him take on corrupt politicians and villains on screen, usually resolving conflicts within three hours, often after a short intermission.
“Now, the people of Tamil Nadu have entrusted him with a responsibility far greater than any role he has played on the silver screen,” he added. – May 12, 2026
