KUALA LUMPUR – British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Tuesday refused to step down, insisting he would “get on with governing” despite a turbulent 48 hours marked by growing calls for him to outline a timetable for his departure after Labour’s poor election performance.
At a cabinet meeting, Starmer, who has been in office for less than two years, acknowledged responsibility for one of Labour’s worst election defeats but noted that no official leadership challenge had been triggered, Reuters reported.
“The past 48 hours have been destabilising for government and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families,” Starmer told ministers, according to his Downing Street office. “The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet.”
British government bonds rose slightly following his remarks but remained in negative territory for the day.
Starmer’s stance contrasts sharply with growing unrest within his party. On Tuesday, junior minister Miatta Fahnbulleh resigned and called on Starmer to set out a timetable for an “orderly transition.” Her departure followed the resignations of several ministerial aides, while more than 80 Labour MPs have publicly urged the prime minister to announce a resignation date to facilitate a smooth leadership handover.
Earlier, Starmer attempted to reinforce his position, promising to act with greater urgency and determination to address Britain’s challenges.
He warned that the country would never forgive Labour if it faced a leadership contest just two years after winning a commanding parliamentary majority intended to end the political instability that followed the EU referendum.
Pressure continued to mount as cabinet members arrived at No 10 for further discussions. Speculation is rife that Health Secretary Wes Streeting may launch a leadership bid, although his team has remained silent.
On Monday, Starmer vowed to continue his leadership, acknowledging that the party’s local election results were “tough” while asserting that Labour would “be better and do better.” – May 12, 2026
