Kuala Selangor PKR AGM descends into chaos as no-confidence dispute leaves three women injured

Tensions flare after AGM as members challenge handling of motion against division chief; police reports lodged

KUALA LUMPUR – A disagreement over a no-confidence motion targeting Kuala Selangor PKR division chief M Sivabalan erupted into a scuffle following the party’s annual general meeting (AGM) today, with a video of the incident circulating widely on social media.

The confrontation occurred roughly 20 minutes after the AGM concluded, when a group of members reportedly returned to the hall demanding clarification on why the motion against Sivabalan was neither debated nor voted on during the meeting.

Sivabalan explained that the motion had been formally accepted but could not be deliberated at division level, as it fell outside the committee’s authority and must instead be referred to the party’s central leadership.

“They came back after the meeting had ended and insisted that the motion be debated again. I told them clearly that there was no basis for further debate at division level because the motion had already been accepted and will be forwarded to the central leadership,” he said.

“This is not something that can be resolved or voted on here. A no-confidence motion has to go through the proper party channels and be decided by the central leadership in accordance with the constitution,” he added.

Sivabalan noted that the motion involved two key issues — the no-confidence vote against his leadership and the appointment of village chiefs — both of which are beyond the division committee’s decision-making powers.

“These issues are not within the jurisdiction of the division committee. The appointment of village chiefs, for example, is not under our control. Likewise, the no-confidence motion cannot be decided on the spot by a division meeting. I did not reject the motion; I accepted it formally and said it would be submitted to the central leadership for further action,” he explained.

He also confirmed that the altercation resulted in injuries to three women members, who suffered swelling on their hands.

“It is unfortunate that things escalated after the meeting had already ended. Three women members sustained minor injuries, including swelling on their hands. This should not have happened at a party meeting,” Sivabalan said.

Police reports have been filed over the incident, with an additional report planned at the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters. Sivabalan also confirmed that he had previously lodged a police report after receiving a death threat connected to internal party tensions ahead of the AGM.

“I have already made a police report regarding a death threat that I believe is connected to internal disputes within the division. A further report will also be lodged regarding today’s incident. All matters are now being handled through the proper legal channels,” he said.

Meanwhile, PKR secretary-general Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh confirmed the incident but emphasised that it did not affect the AGM’s validity.

“The Kuala Selangor division’s annual general meeting proceeded as scheduled and remains valid in accordance with the party constitution,” she told Scoop.

A video clip of the post-meeting scuffle has since gone viral on social media, showing a brief confrontation between several individuals inside the hall.

The Kuala Selangor PKR division has previously drawn attention over internal tensions following divisional elections, highlighting ongoing friction within the local party structure. – May 16, 2026
