No by-elections for Pandan and Setiawangsa: Election Commission

Following notification from Dewan Rakyat Speaker, EC confirms there is no need to fill parliamentary vacancies

KUALA LUMPUR – The Election Commission (EC) has confirmed that by-elections for the Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats will not be held, said its chairman, Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun.

He explained that the decision is based on Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution, with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul informing SPR that there is no requirement to fill the unexpected vacancies, Bernama reported.

“In accordance with this, no by-election for the P.100 Pandan and P.118 Setiawangsa parliamentary constituencies will be conducted,” he said in a statement today.

Datuk Seri Ramlan added that SPR received official notification from Johari through a letter dated today regarding the status of the two parliamentary vacancies, which had been declared vacant under Article 51 of the Federal Constitution.

Last Sunday, former PKR Deputy President Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and former PKR Vice President Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced their intention to vacate their parliamentary seats on Monday and resign from the party effective Tuesday via letters to the party’s Secretary-General.

They subsequently joined a small political party based in Penang, known as Parti Bersama Malaysia (BERSAMA). — May 20, 2026
