KUALA LUMPUR — The National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) will start deploying new detection kits across Malaysia from June to tackle the growing threat of synthetic drugs, including fentanyl and synthetic cannabinoids increasingly found in vape liquids.
Datuk Ruslin Jusoh, AADK Director-General, said the kits have already been distributed to all agency offices nationwide and will be used by enforcement personnel during field operations, Bernama reported.
“We will begin conducting tests using the (synthetic drug) test kit, especially for fentanyl and synthetic cannabinoids. Beginning June, we will conduct operations and test (individuals) using the device,” he told reporters after attending AADK’s Aidiladha appreciation of noble values and korban ritual programme here today.
He highlighted that synthetic drugs such as fentanyl present a more severe danger than traditional substances like cannabis and heroin. The new test kits are designed to detect fentanyl, synthetic cannabinoids, and cocaine, including when these substances are incorporated into vape liquids.
Previously, Ruslin noted that synthetic drug addiction in Malaysia has reached an alarming rate, accounting for 70% of the country’s drug addiction cases. Authorities have also observed a trend of syndicates mixing prohibited substances into electronic cigarette or vape liquids.
Regarding enforcement, Ruslin said 15,000 individuals had been detained for drug abuse in the first five months of this year. He added that, based on intelligence, public complaints, and other sources, arrests could reach 40,000 by year-end. The agency has also established a drone unit to support its operations. – May 28, 2026
