KUALA LUMPUR — Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has announced the dissolution of the state legislative assembly after receiving the consent of Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the Regent of Johor.
Onn Hafiz announced this in a special press conference at the Menteri Besar’s official residence in Bukit Sauna, Johor Bahru, at 5pm.
Onn Hafiz said the regent consented to the writ of dissolution, dated today.
“On his royal decree, the regent gave his consent effective today.
“This dissolution paves the way for the democratic process of elections for Johor. It will allow the people of Johor to elect a new state government and obtain a fresh mandate to continue the state’s development agenda.
“I urge all political parties, leaders and supporters, to observe decorum and order as we go through this democratic process,” Onn Hafiz said in the brief press conference that was broadcast live online.
Following dissolution of the state assembly, elections for the legislature’s 56 seats must be held within 60 days.
Onn Hafiz added that the next steps would now be undertaken by the electoral authorities.
“The Election Commission will now undertake the necessary process to determine the dates for nomination, early voting and polling,” he said.
It means Johor will have a snap poll, as the assembly’s term is only due to expire in April next year.
Last month, Onn Hafiz said Johor Barisan Nasional will contest the state election alone, without collaboration with its federal ally, Pakatan Harapan.
In Johor, however, BN runs the state government without PH.
In the 2022 state election, BN won a two-thirds majority of 40 out of the 56 seats. PH has 12 seats, Perikatan Nasional three and Muda, one.
The upcoming election will mark the 16th state election in Johor since the first state polls were held in 1955. – June 1, 2026
