KUALA LUMPUR – The federal government remains focused on governing and has no immediate plans to call the 16th General Election (GE16), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He stressed that the government’s priority is to ensure policies are implemented effectively and administrative responsibilities are carried out without disruption, Astro Awani reported.

Responding to questions on the dissolution of the Johor State Legislative Assembly earlier this week, Anwar said the matter was for the state leadership to decide.

“It’s their decision (Barisan Nasional Johor). We have our own priorities and are focused on our tasks,” he told reporters after launching the Energy Transition Conference 2026 (ETCon26) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

Also present at the event were Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Razak Abdul Majid.

When asked whether the upcoming Johor state election could distract the government from its administrative agenda, Anwar reiterated that Putrajaya would remain focused on its responsibilities.

“My focus is on my duties. The problem is that some parties do not take this into account. We should be concentrating on work.

“That is their decision. We have our own priorities and need to focus on our responsibilities,” he said.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced on Monday that the state assembly had been dissolved after receiving the consent of the Johor Regent, Tunku Mahkota Ismail.

The move clears the way for a state election, which must be held within 60 days. Dates for candidate nominations and polling will be determined by the Election Commission.

In May, Anwar indicated that an early dissolution of Parliament could be considered if political developments among partners in the Unity Government threatened national political stability.
