KUALA LUMPUR — Bersatu is not leaving the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition despite PAS’ decision to sever ties with it, party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
“It was PAS who decided to stop our political cooperation and end ties with Bersatu.
“As a founding party of PN, Bersatu will continue to remain in PN to strengthen it,” he said in a statement on Facebook.
This follow PAS’ decision to cut ties with Bersatu at a meeting of its central leadership last night. PAS has instead decided to pursue political arrangements and electoral pacts based on “Muslim unity” for the coming state election and the 16th general election.
Muhyiddin said Bersatu was disappointed with PAS’ decision, but stressed that it was PAS which made the move.
He urged party members and supporters to strengthen PN by placing the interest of voters first.
On Sunday, just a day before the PAS leadership met, Muhyiddin sought to extend an olive branch, saying Bersatu wanted to continue resolving issues with PAS to foster stronger relations.
PAS’ decision last night comes nearly three weeks after PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang publicly said the party was reassessing its ties with Bersatu, following months of friction between the two parties.
Meanwhile, Bersatu supreme council member Dr Afif Bahardin said Muhyiddin should be to be reinstated as PN chairman since PAS has decided to end ties with Bersatu.
“PN now needs a leader who can unite and calm the situation and rebuilt the coalition’s strength,” the Taman Medan assemblyman said on Facebook.
PAS, however, is in control of PN, as its vice-president and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar is coalition chairman.
He took over from Muhyiddin who stepped down from the PN chairman post effective January 1. – June 9, 2026
