Tunku Zain proclaimed Tunku Panglima Besar Negeri Sembilan

Academic, corporate leader and advocate for education and public policy recognised with one of Negeri Sembilan’s highest hereditary titles

KUALA LUMPUR — Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir today proclaimed his second son, Tunku Zain Al-’Abidin, as the holder of the hereditary title of Putera Yang Empat, Tunku Panglima Besar of Negeri Sembilan, effective immediately.

The proclamation ceremony took place at the Balairong Seri of Istana Besar Seri Menanti and was attended by Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud and Tunku Besar Seri Menanti Tunku Ali Redhauddin Tuanku Muhriz, Bernama reported.

Also present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, senior state officials and heads of government departments.

The appointment fills the vacancy in the hereditary title of Tunku Panglima Besar of Negeri Sembilan, which was previously held by Tunku Datuk Seri Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar.

In a statement, Negeri Sembilan Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Azizi Mohamad Ali said His Royal Highness was confident that Tunku Zain Al-’Abidin would continue to play a significant role in preserving the sovereignty of the Negeri Sembilan Royal Institution while safeguarding the interests of the people and the state.

He said Tunku Zain, in his capacity as Tunku Panglima Besar, is expected to uphold the traditions and responsibilities associated with the hereditary title in service of Negeri Sembilan and its people.

Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin, 44, is a passionate advocate for constitutional restoration and institutional reform in Malaysia, striving to create a fairer nation where every Malaysian has the opportunity to thrive.

He was educated at Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur, Marlborough College in the United Kingdom, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he earned his MSc in Comparative Politics. He has worked with the UK Parliament, the World Bank, and the United Nations, and is an Eisenhower Fellow.

He is especially dedicated to education and to developing the potential of young Malaysians. He also serves as Chancellor of UCSI University, Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), and President of ICAN College.

As a Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Patron of the Negeri Sembilan Schools Arts and Culture Programme, Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin actively champions greater access to quality education, holistic learning, and the nurturing of well-rounded future leaders.

Through these important roles and various education-focused foundations, he works tirelessly to strengthen Malaysia’s education system and open doors of opportunity for the next generation.

Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin, who has been proclaimed Tunku Panglima Besar Negeri Sembilan, is widely recognised for his contributions to public policy, education, business, and community development.

He is the founding president of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), a think tank focused on developing practical public policy solutions grounded in the principles of the rule of law, liberty, and justice.

Through IDEAS, he co-founded the IDEAS Autism Centre, which operates three centres in Rawang, Nilai, and Port Dickson, as well as the IDEAS International Secondary School, with campuses in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

In the corporate sector, Tunku Zain serves as chairman of Omesti Berhad, Excelerate Malaysia, and Enotech Pictures. He is also a board member of Deutsche Bank Malaysia, Prima Gading Corporation, and Uni Enrol, while serving as an adviser to the UCSI Group.

His community involvement extends to several charitable and educational organisations. He is a trustee of Yayasan Chow Kit, Yayasan Munarah, Yayasan IDEAS, the Genovasi Foundation, and the Tinggi Foundation, supporting initiatives in education, youth development, and community empowerment.

A strong advocate of arts and culture, Tunku Zain is an accomplished pianist who has performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. He also spearheaded a project to revitalise Negeri Sembilan’s state anthem and authored a commemorative book marking the installation of the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

Since 2008, he has written a regular newspaper column, with several books later published based on his collected writings.

Beyond his professional and philanthropic commitments, he is an avid racquet sports enthusiast. He serves as President Emeritus of the Negeri Sembilan Squash Association and is an adviser to both the Negeri Sembilan Tennis Association and the Negeri Sembilan Pickleball Association. – June 11, 2026
