KUALA LUMPUR – The long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and JERA Co Inc underscores continued international confidence in Malaysia as a reliable and competitive energy supplier.
Political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, said the collaboration also highlights the enduring trade and energy ties between Malaysia and Japan, particularly within the petroleum sector, Bernama reported.
“This development is very positive because, amid the current uncertainty in the global market, Malaysia continues to be among the countries of choice for many nations seeking energy supplies.
“As for this collaboration between Malaysia and Japan, we agreed to work with JERA because we have maintained trade relations in the petroleum industry with Japanese companies since the early days of Petronas’ establishment,” he said.
He spoke to reporters after officiating the 2026 Academic Excellence Awards ceremony at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tanjong Rambutan here on Friday.
Last Wednesday, Petronas announced that it will supply LNG to JERA for a 20-year period beginning in 2028 under a newly concluded long-term agreement.
Muhammad Kamil said the deal is expected to further strengthen strategic energy cooperation between Malaysia and Japan while also delivering positive spillover effects to the national economy.
He added that revenues generated from LNG exports would enhance Petronas’ profitability, which in turn would increase dividend contributions to the government.
“Profits from Petronas’ LNG supply operations will contribute to dividend returns to the government, thereby boosting national revenue that can be utilised to implement various development programmes for the well-being of the people,” he said. – July 13, 2026
