KUALA LUMPUR — Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan has welcomed fulfilment of the promise of permanent housing for the Bukit Kiara Longhouse residents.
“This solution is an important achievement of the MADANI Government in ensuring that the long-overdue issues of the people can be resolved comprehensively,” he said in a statement after attending the project’s groundbreaking ceremony today.
“This is not just a housing project, but a finishing point to a long wait since 1982, as well as the return of rights, dignity and hope to the communities involved,” added Ramanan, who is also PKR vice-president.
The Bukit Kiara Longhouse community, comprising 98 families, has waited 44 years for permanent housing. They currently live in wooden quarters and will move to their new homes after completion in three years’ time.
Ramanann also welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of a RM1 million allocation to subsidise maintenance costs for residents’ permanent housing.
“The decision by the Prime Minister is a clear signal that the government will not delay justice for the people, and also shows that steps have been taken to ensure the sustainability and proper management of the community for the years ahead.
Ramanan, who is also Sungai Buloh MP, said the permanent housing project will directly benefit the urban poor community, especially the provision of two new housing units free of charge for every eligible family.
“This project may be modest in terms of physical scale, but its impact is enormous for the lives of people who have waited far too long,” he said.
Ramanan also thanked all parties involved in making the initiative a success, including Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun bin Mak Ujud, relevant government agencies and implementation teams.
Earlier today, Anwar announced a RM1 million allocation to help cover maintenance fees for Bukit Kiara Longhouse residents once they relocate to their permanent homes.
The funds will be distributed through Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), which will manage the subsidy and ensure it is used to reduce the residents’ monthly cost on maintenance fees. – June 15, 2026
