KUALA LUMPUR – The long-awaited Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) line connecting Shah Alam and surrounding areas in Selangor is set to begin operations by the end of this month, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook announced.
“The specific date will be announced in the next two weeks,” he said, adding that the project was now in its final trial operations.
“After various tests and trial operations are finalised, we are confident that operations can start,” he told reporters after chairing the Malaysian Road Safety Council’s 62nd annual general meeting yesterday.
Loke also revealed that the draft bill to establish the Malaysian Transport Safety Board (MTSB) will not be tabled in the upcoming Parliament session.
“The MTSB has obtained Cabinet approval, but now we are discussing with the Public Service Department about job positions and such,” he said.
He added that his ministry had already identified individuals to be appointed to the board, with finalisation expected soon.
On another front, Loke said the ministry will hold talks with e-hailing operators on possible new security measures to protect drivers, including the installation of dashcams. However, passenger privacy concerns must be weighed carefully.
“In terms of security measures, we will discuss with e-hailing operations on the steps that can be taken to protect drivers… both parties are equally important – passengers are important, and so is the safety of drivers.
“So we have to take the balance,” he added. – June 16, 2026
