Leave PN if contesting against PAS in state polls, Muhyiddin told

PAS vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah questions how Bersatu can remain in Perikatan Nasional but run against PAS in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan elections

KUALA LUMPUR — Bersatu should leave Perikatan Nasional (PN) if it plans to contest against PAS in the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, PAS vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said.

He also said it was hasty of Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to think that his party could use PN’s logo in the state polls, as such a decision was not his to make alone.

“If it is true he wants to contest (against PAS) then he can’t be in PN. Bersatu has to leave,” Amar was reported saying by Berita Harian in Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan, today.

“As for using PN’s logo, I think there’s a mistake in his statement. There are rules. The authorisation must be signed by the PN chairman, not the president of (a component) party.”

Amar, who was speaking to the media after officiating Pengkalan Chepa PAS’ annual general meeting today, was responding to Muhyiddin’s statement last night after a meeting of Bersatu’s supreme leadership council.

Muhyiddin said Bersatu would not leave PN but was also ready to contest against PAS in the coming state elections using PN’s logo. Johor’s election is on July 11 and Negeri Sembilan’s on August 1.

PN is now chaired by PAS vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who is also Terengganu Menteri Besar, after Muhyiddin stepped down from the chairman’s post effective January 1.

Muhyiddin had also stressed that Bersatu cannot be removed from PN unilaterally based on the decision of any single party.

PAS recently announced its official decision to end all forms of political cooperation with Bersatu. PAS has since openly shown support for the new party, Parti Wawasan Negara, formed by former Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin who was sacked for opposing Muhyiddin.

Amar, meanwhile, said PAS would be holding a meeting tonight about the position of the sole Kelantan exco member from Bersatu in the PAS-led state government.

Bersatu’s Gual Ipoh assemblyman Bahari Mohd Nor is Kelantan’s deputy chairman for youth, sports, non-governmental organisations and community unity, but his post in the state government is now uncertain following PAS’ decision to end political cooperation with Bersatu. – June 17, 2026
