KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad has appointed Tan Sri Dr Azmil Khalid as its non-independent non-executive chairman, effective June 18, 2026, marking a key leadership transition at the group.
In a statement, the company said Azmil succeeds Dr Nungsari Ahmad Radhi, who steps down after more than two years in the role following his appointment to the board of Khazanah Nasional Berhad.
The board described his departure as the end of a significant chapter, noting his role during a period of structural change for the airport operator.
“Malaysia Airports underwent a landmark privatisation exercise during his tenure which saw the company delisting from Bursa Malaysia in February 2025 to become a private entity under the Gateway Development Alliance (GDA) consortium.”
It added that under his leadership, the group “successfully crossed critical operational and structural milestones during its post-privatisation transformation period”, including the advancement of key capital projects and terminal expansion works at airports such as Penang and Kota Kinabalu.
The board also highlighted his contribution in balancing commercial and national responsibilities, describing him as a distinguished economist who helped guide the group’s strategic direction during its transition.
“The Board and the management team are profoundly grateful to Dr Nungsari for his visionary guidance and wish him every success as he moves on to contribute his vast expertise to the Board of Khazanah.”
Tan Sri Dr Azmil brings more than three decades of experience in corporate leadership, infrastructure development and international business.
He previously served as president and chief executive officer of The AlloyMtd Group and ANIH Berhad from 2011 to 2017, and earlier held senior leadership roles at MTD Capital Bhd, including group managing director and later group president and CEO.
He is currently group chairman of AFA Group and president and CEO of AFK Group, and holds multiple board positions across the corporate sector, including chairman of UEM Edgenta Berhad, as well as directorships in Sapura Industrial Berhad, Elridge Energy Holdings Berhad and Cenviro Sdn Bhd.
Academically, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Hertfordshire and Northrop University, an MBA from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of Hertfordshire.
Welcoming the appointment, the board said it is “delighted to welcome Tan Sri Dr Azmil Khalid as our new Chairman to lead Malaysia Airports into its next phase of growth and operational excellence.”
In the same announcement, the Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) has approved the extension of Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani’s tenure as managing director for another two years, effective August 1, 2026.
The board said the move is intended to ensure continuity at the executive level, stating it aims to “strengthen organisational stability and ensure uninterrupted execution of Malaysia Airports’ core strategic initiatives, towards positioning Malaysia as the most connected country in Asia Pacific.” – June 18, 2026
