KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has received a commitment from Russian President Vladimir Putin for a long-term agreement to ensure energy supplies to the country, saaid Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said the assurance was given during a private four-eyes bilateral meeting with Putin held on the sidelines of his visit to Russia on Tuesday.
He described the development as a positive relief for Malaysia, noting that energy security has become an emerging national challenge.
“In Kazan, Russia, during the summit meeting between ASEAN leadership and President Putin, I also had the opportunity to hold a bilateral, one-on-one meeting. “I expressed my thanks and raised two points with Putin.
“From our experience with Russia, even when it is difficult, it has fulfilled the commitments it made and has delivered on its promises,” Anwar said.
“This includes the final commitment where President Putin told me he agreed to a long-term agreement to guarantee Malaysia’s energy supply.”
Anwar was speaking at the closing ceremony of the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2026 in Butterworth today.
On Tuesday, he held bilateral talks with Putin in Kazan, where he also expressed appreciation for Russia’s consistent stance on the Gaza issue and wider geopolitical developments involving Iran.
Energy cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with Anwar highlighting opportunities in oil and gas, particularly downstream activities, refining and petrochemicals, given Tatarstan’s status as one of Russia’s key oil-producing regions.
Anwar was recently in Kazan to attend the 35th Asean-Russia Commemorative Summit. – June 20, 2026
