KUALA LUMPUR – Polling for the 16th Johor state election officially ended at 6 pm today, with all 1,076 polling centres across the state closing their doors.

Voting began at 8 am, with polling stations closing at staggered times throughout the day. The earliest centre to conclude voting was Balai Raya Pulau Besar in the Tenggaroh state constituency, which closed at 11 am.

As of 5 pm, a total of 67.44%, or 1,809,185 out of more than 2.6 million ordinary voters, had cast their ballots, according to the Election Commission (EC).

The EC had set a voter turnout target of 70% for the election, with official results expected to be announced as early as 10 pm tonight.

All ballot boxes from 4,889 voting streams are now being transported to designated vote tallying centres, where the counting process will take place before the official results are declared.

Meanwhile, the opening of postal ballot envelopes has begun and is being livestreamed on the EC’s official Facebook page as part of efforts to ensure transparency.

A total of 172 candidates are contesting the 56 seats in the Johor state election.

The EC said Sri Medan recorded the highest voter turnout at 77.2%, followed by Semarang at 76.8% and Sedili at 74.3%.

The constituencies with the lowest turnout were Bekok at 58.9%, Stulang at 60.5% and Perling at 60.6%.

For comparison, voter turnout at the same stage during the 15th Johor state election was 53.13%, involving 1,367,909 voters out of more than 2.57 million registered voters.

Earlier, Balai Raya Pulau Besar became the first polling centre to close in today’s state election.

Tenggaroh returning officer Jamil Hasni Abdullah said the centre, which had one voting channel and 32 registered voters, closed at 11 am.

“The polling centres at Balai Raya Pulau Aur and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pulau Pemanggil closed at noon, while Balai Raya Pulau Sibu and SK Pulau Tinggi closed at 2 pm,” he told Bernama.

The five islands covered by these polling centres have a combined total of 690 registered voters.

The EC reported that 42.16%, or 1,130,980 out of more than 2.6 million voters, had cast their ballots as of 1 pm.

The polling process continued until 6 pm before the counting process commenced. – July 11, 2026
